FORMER ALTON RESIDENT GONE
Mrs. J. W. Houwers Died Friday at Her Home in Hull

Mrs. J. W. Houwers, a resident of Alton some twenty years ago, passed away Friday at her home in Hull after a long illness. She was 77 years of age. She is survived by her husband and four daughters, Mina, Mrs. Ben Meylink of Hull; Mary, Mrs. Peter Moeller of Doon; Katie, Mrs. Martin Moeller of Sioux Center; and Dina, who is married and lives in California, but was at her mother’s bedside in her last illness. Funeral services were held Monday at the American Ref. church in Hull, Rev. Stoppels officiating.

The family lived in Alton for some years and were much respected and liked. Mr. Houwers was a painter and decorator, occupying the present Mrs. W. Mulder house. Friends from here who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C. Vander Moer and son Floyd, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Klein, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Dowma, Mrs. D. Roos, Mrs. Fred Kooreman, Mrs. S. Eason, Mrs. G. Vanden Burg, Mrs. G. Keizer, Miss Hilda Eason.

MRS. HOUWERS DIES

Mrs. J. W. Houwers, nee Kate Eernisse, passed away at her home in Hull Thursday evening June 21 at 6 o’clock at the age of 77 years 5 months and 29 days. Her death was caused by cirrhosis of the liver from which she had been a patient sufferer for some months.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the American Reformed church and was in charge of Rev. C. Stoppels of Hull, Rev. J. H. Tietema of Sanborn and Rev. A. Haverkamp of Sioux Center. She had been a faithful member of the Reformed Church in whichever community she lived since 1882.

The deceased was born near Oestburg, Wis., December 23, 1850. She was married to J. W. Houwers on November 19, 1874 and they continued to reside in Sheboygan Co. until 1881 when they came to what was then East Orange, Iowa, now Alton, Iowa. They resided here for 26 years and then in 1907 returned to Sheboygan Falls, Wis. where they lived until 1915 when they moved to Monroe, S.D. from where they came to Hull in 1918 and have since made this their home.

There were seven children born to this union, two of whom Garret and Anna died in 1880 during a scourge of black diphtheria and one Johanna (Mrs. G. Vande Waa) died in 1914. The surviving children are Mina, Mrs. B. J. Meylink of Hull, Mary, Mrs. P. W. Moeller of Doon, Katie, Mrs. M. T. Moeller of Sioux Center, and Dina, Mrs. L. C. Hollingsworth of La Mesa, California, who with the husband are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. There are ten grand children.

The surviving brothers and sisters are Joe Eernisse of Leota, Minn., Mrs. Anna Stronks of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mrs. Dina Houwers, Mrs. G. Dulmes, Jacob Eernisse, Mrs. Theo Wilderdink, Peter Eernisse, John Eernisse, and Nettie Eernisse all of Sheboygan County, Wis. The Index wishes to join the many friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy.

Her death certificate has Kate Houwers, born Jan. 23, 1851 in Wisconsin; parents Abraham Eernisse and Johaana DeZoute, both born in Holland; resident of Hull 10 years, 3 months, 25 days; wife of John W. Houwers; died at 6:05 p.m. June 21, 1928; cause cirrhosis of liver, duration 1 year.

FindaGrave.com gives her full name, Catherine Maria “Kate” Houwers, with children Anna (1879-1880), Garret (1880-1880), Mina Bernice Meylink (Dec. 10, 1881-Sept. 10, 1960), Johanna “Josie” (July 1884-June 30, 1914), Mary F. Moeller (Oct. 16, 1886-Oct. 13, 1965), Katie Moeller (Nov. 20, 1888-Nov. 20, 1989), and Dina Gertrude Hollingsworth (Aug. 16 1894-May 2, 1980).
