Mrs. Luella Grotenhuis, age 92, of Hospers, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a celebration of her life on Wednesday, February 28, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Troy Van Beek and the Rev. Michael Pitsenberger will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be after 9:00am on Wednesday at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Luella Mae was born on February 28, 1925, at Hospers, the daughter of John and Anna (De Boer) Den Hartog. She attended the Hospers Public School through the tenth grade.

On July 18, 1945, she married William E. Grotenhuis at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. They made their home mostly in Hospers, where she was an operator for the Hospers Telephone Company and managed the Co-op Hi-way Café and later the Kountry Kitchen. She and Bill also managed the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. He passed away on October 21, 1993, in Orange City.

On June 21, 2013, she became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. On October 18, 2013, she transferred to the new Prairie Ridge Care Center, where she had the honor of cutting the ribbon at their grand opening.

Mrs. Grotenhuis was an active member of the First Reformed Church, where she served as chairman of the Women’s Classical Ministry and spiritual life chairman of her circle. She also sang in the choir and was instrumental in organizing a walk-on choir.

She enjoyed baking, cooking, entertaining, playing cards, and reading. She also liked to crochet Afghans, clothes hanger covers, and pot holders. Unfortunately, many of these activities ended, when she lost most of her eyesight this past year. She was known for always having a dish of candy available

Survivors include her daughter and her husband, Lois and Dennis Kinney, of Le Mars; three sons and their wives, Ed and Cheryl Grotenhuis, of Alton; Bill and Mary Grotenhuis, of Jacksonville, Florida; and David and Karen Grotenhuis, of Norwood, North Carolina; two granddaughters, four grandsons, two step-granddaughters, four step-grandsons, two great granddaughters, three great-grandsons, six step-great-grandsons, two great-grandchildren on the way; a sister, Wanda (Bill) Johnson, of Sun City, Arizona; two brothers, The Rev. Don (Audrey) Den Hartog and John (Ann) Den Hartog, both of Orange City; a brother-in-law, Roger Dekker numerous nieces and nephews; and a faithful friend, Shirley Miller.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was welcomed to heaven by four brothers, Alvin (Bob) Den Hartog, Francis (Fritz) Den Hartog, Richard Den Hartog, and Howard Den Hartog; and four sisters, Angeline Zwagerman, Genevieve Van Kooten, Alma Van Kley, and Wilma Dekker; Five brothers-in-law, and five sisters-in-law.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
