From the Rock Valley Bee, April 6, 1928:

Death of Former Pioneer Resident

As announced in last week’s Bee, H. R. Siemonsma passed away at his home in Santa Ana, California, Wednesday March 29. Mr. Siemonsma was taken sick last summer from a tumor which later developed into cancer. He went to a hospital in Sioux Falls where he submitted to an operation, and obtained some relief. After spending several weeks in ths hospital, he was brought to the home of his son, Barney Siemonsma, at the old homestead north of Rock Valley. He spent a few weeks there until he felt strong enough to stand the trip to his home in California, where he seemed quite comfortable for a few days, but soon began to fail and continued to grow weaker until his final summons came.

Mr. Siemonsma was a pioneer of this vicinity. He lived on the farm north of town for about thirty years. He was an honest hard working man and always took an active interest un the affairs of his community, and was well known in Sioux and Lyon counties.

Mr. Siemonsma was born in the Netherlands October 30, 1855, and had attained the age of seventy-two years, four months, and twenty-one days. He came to this country when he was nineteen years of age and had resided in Sioux County most of the time. Nine years ago he moved with his family to Santa Ana, California, but came back to Rock Valley frequently, and had spent the past two years or more here, looking after his farm interests.

Mr. Siemonsma was united in marriage with Miss Mary Dickman at Dyersville, Iowa, thirty nine years ago. He leaves to mourn, his wife and six children, Mrs. Wm. Schuster, of Santa Ana, Mrs. F. C. Scanlan, of Algona, Iowa, Mrs. John Cardall, of Eugene, Oregon, Barney Siemonsma, Rock Valley, Harry Siemonsma, Jr., and Clarence Siemonsma, of Santa Ana.

Funeral services were held at Santa Ana Saturday.
