Home of Her Son Saturday

Mrs. Fred Lutjens, mother of Mrs. John Jantzen, Henry P. Lutjens and Claus Lutjens, died at the home of her son, Claus, last Saturday afternoon, following a very long illness.

The funeral was held Tuesday at the German Lutheran Church northeast of Hull, and was largely attended.

Mrs. Lutjens was well known to most of those in this vicinity as a kindly old lady, and her presence will be missed by both friends and relatives alike.

The Index wishes to join the friends of the sorrowing family in extending sincere sympathy.

~Obituary~

Mrs. Margaretha Rebecka Lutjens, nee Funck, was born on January 30th, 1860, at Hasenflethe by Oberndorf, Auit Neuhaus on the Oste, Germany.

In the year 1871, at the age of 11 years, she came with her parents to America and for seven years made her home in Muscatine, Iowa. She came to Sioux County in 1878, and in 1879 she was united in holy wedlock with Fritz D. Lutjens.

Mr. Lutjens had prepared a home for his bride on a farm three mile northeast of Hull. Here for twenty-two years, Mr. and Mrs. Lutjen were privileged to live their lives together and to rear their family of five children; three daughters and two sons. Thirty four years ago, Mr. Lutjens passed away.

About nine years ago, Mrs. Lutjens felt the first symptoms of the disease which finally caused her death; namely cancer. This ailment necessitated several treatments during the last year which brought her temporary relief. Eight weeks ago she became bedfast, gradually growing weaker and at 5 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, the 29th of June, 1935, she passed to her eternal home, having attained the age of 75 years, 4 months and 29 days.

She leaves to mourn her passing, five children: Katherine, Mrs. John Jantzen of Hull; Mrs. Marie Hamann of Gary, South Dakota; Henry Lutjens of Hull; Sophia, Mrs. Peter Kruse of Boyden; and Claus Lutjens of Hull. She is also survived by sixteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
