Sioux County ‘Iowa Index’ Friday March 2nd 1894
William Holmes, who is so well known among the older residents of i Sioux county, died at his, home on Feb. 20tb,1894, at the advanced age of 82 years. The deceased was born in Yorkshire, England, August 26lh 1811. While in his youthful vigor, he in company with his wife, emigrated to America, lauding at New York, remaining there for one year, subsequently returning to his native land on account of business matters which required his presence. He and his wife remained there until the year 1855, and again set sail for the western continent, landing at Canada where they resided for nine years. In 1867 they decided to push farther west, and made a home at Kenosha, Wis. They remained at that place until 1871, when the tide of emigration moved them farther west, landing them in Sioux county, where they had held continuous residence until his death.

Father Holmes leaves a faithful wife to mourn his loss, who for over 63 years has been his helpmate through the changing scenes and customs they had passed. Three sons survive this aged father; twenty on grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; two brothers and one sister, the three latter of whom will learn of the sad news when it reaches them at their home in England, through the mail. To the surviving partner of the deceased, does the blow fall most heavily. No sympathizing word can, assuage the grief which ;.comes to one who for sixty-two long years bas walked side by side over the rough and stony path of life, enjoying the smooth portions of ."life's journeys with the same degree of pleasure one with the other. There comes a time however, when the bauds must be loosened; as they near the dark surging shore. Thus it is; and hope bids us wait with patience for the coming of him who will lead us safely to the other side.

Note: See the obit of his son John as reports William's wife was Mary Wiles of Willis
