From the Alton Democrat, November 25, 1927:

MRS. VRIEZE, PIONEER OF COUNTY, DIES
Came to Sioux County in 1873; Funeral Friday Afternoon

Mrs. Dora Vrieze passed away Tuesday noon at the home south of Alton, after an illness which confined her to the house for the past six years. Funeral services will be held at the home at one o’clock Friday afternoon and at two o’clock at the Reformed church.

Dora Rexwinkel was born 67 years ago at Alto, Wis., in the year 1860. She came with her parents to Sioux County in 1873 among the early settlers of the farming country south of Orange City. She was married to John Vrieze and became the mother of five sons and two daughters. In 1893 when the oldest child was but 12 years her husband died leaving her with a family of seven children to bring up. She kept the little brood together until they were grown up and made homes for themselves. During her last years she was cared for by her son John and since the death of her son Joe in May Mrs. Joe Vrieze has been with her mother-in-law.

Five children survive their mother, John, William, Mrs. Peter Jiskoot, Gerrit and Mrs. Herbert Lucas. Ben died several years ago and Joe passed away last spring. She is also survived by three brothers and one sister, Gerrit Rexwinkel of Waupon, Wis., Joe Rexwinkel of Alton, Will Rexwinkel of Newkirk, Mrs. Herman Riedeman of Alton. Her father, the venerable H. J. Rexwinkel, passed away just five weeks ago.

Mrs. Vrieze was a noble, devoted wife and mother and beloved by a host of friends. During her last years she was a patient and uncomplaining sufferer. The family have the sincere sympathy of the community.
