From the Rock Valley Bee, August 12, 1927:

JOHN BAUMAN IS KILLED IN ACCIDENT

Mrs. Bert Starr received a message Tuesday morning advising her of the death of her brother, John Bauman, who lived on a farm near Castlewood, S.D. The particulars were not given, but Mrs. Starr understands from the message that he had been killed, in an accident with a tractor with which he was working. It is reported that he was crushed to death between a tractor and harvesting machine.

Mr. Bauman lived in Rock Valley and vicinity for many years before going to South Dakota, and is well known here.

The remains will be brought to Rock Valley, and are expected to arrive here this Thursday. Funeral services will be held in the Methodist church Thursday afternoon.

DEATH OF JOHN BAUMAN

John Bauman, of Castlewood, S.D., was born December 14, 1881, at Cuba, Kansas. When seven years old he came with his parents to Iowa and located in Lyon County, where he grew to manhood. He formed the acquaintance of Miss Anna Steck, of Rock Valley, this acquaintance ripening into esteem, and they were married November 9, 1907. As a result of this union six children were born to them, five sons and one daughter.

Monday, August 8th, while engaged in cutting grain with a gas-tractor, and without a moment’s warning, the machine fell backwards on him and he was crushed to death. At the time of his passing he was 45 years, seven months and 24 days of age. [Followed by a paragraph of generic sentimental comments.]

The deceased lived in this community many years, and engaged in agricultural pursuits, and four years ago he moved to Castlewood, S.D., where he engaged in farming until his tragic death. He leaves a companion and six children, a father, three brothers, namely: Frank Bauman, Sheldon, Iowa, Ed Bauman, Kidder, S.D., Joe Bauman, Audubon, Iowa; Mrs. Walter Kelly, Audubon, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Buffington, of Luverne, Minn., and Mrs. Bert Starr, of Fairview, S.D., survive him.

The deceased was brought here Wednesday for burial. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Thursday morning at ten o’clock A.M., conducted by the pastor Rev. Lyman F. Focht. Interment was made in the Valley View Cemetery.

Among relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Frank Buffington, Luverne, Minn., Henry Bauman, Kidder, S.D.; Mrs. Walter Kelly, Audubon, Iowa; C. Zwarts and family, Lennox, S.D.; Frank Bauman and family, Sheldon, Iowa; Frank Buss, Hampton, Iowa; and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Wattawa, Castlewood, S.D.

From the Alton Democrat, August 19, 1927, Rock Valley news:

The sad news reached Rock Valley Tuesday of the accidental death of John Bauman on a farm near Castlewood, S.D., Monday evening, August 8. While engaged in cutting grain with a tractor, the tractor tipped backwards, pinning the victim between it and the binder. Henry, the 14 year old son was an eye witness and being unable to remove his father from underneath the burden, ran three-quarters of a mile to a neighbor. Life was extinct before he could be removed.

John Bauman was born at Cuba, Kansas, Dec. 14, 1881 and when but a lad of 7 years moved to Lyon county with his parents, where he grew to manhood. He formed the acquaintance of Miss Anna Steck and in November, 1907 they were united in marriage. Six children were born to this union, five sons and one daughter. At the time of his death he was 45 years, 7 months and 24 days of age. Deceased lived in this community for many years, at one time operating a dray line and also was engaged in farming. About four years ago he and his family moved to their home near Castlewood, S.D., where he was engaged in farming until the eve of his tragic death.

Besides his wife and six children, he leaves to mourn his father, three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at Rock Valley Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Lyman Focht. Interment was made in Valley View cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings deck his funeral bier to show the loving respect of relatives and friends.

Bauman, born 14 Dec 1881 in Cuba, Republic County, Kansas; died 8 August 1927 in Castlewood, Hamlin County, South Dakota; buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa; wife Hindertje Steck Bauman (1890-1982); children Theodore (1907-1959), Bernard (1911-1989), Henry (1913-1982), Paul E. (1915-1963), and Vera Bauman Tank Baker (1920-1989). There is a photo of his and his wife’s joint headstone, giving her name as Anna.

The 1910 U.S. Census for Rock Valley, Iowa shows him as age 28, married 4 years, born in Kansas of German parents, a day laborer for a dray line; with wife Anna (22) and son Ted (3). A comment added to the entry by Peggy Virnig Mnich[?] says that he married Hindertje “Anna” Steck in December 1906.
