From the Alton Democrat, May 13, 1927, Boyden news:

Word was received Sunday morning of the death of Lane Searles, a former resident of this vicinity. He had had a serious operation for appendicitis about a week ago and seemed to be doing very well. Death was due to heart trouble.

LEONARD J. SAARLOOS

Leonard J. Saarloos, who underwent an operation for appendicitis a week ago Friday, passed away Sunday morning, May 8th, at the age of 43 years, 6 months and 12 days.

Born in the Netherlands, Oct. 26, 1883, Mr. Saarloos came to America 14 years ago, settling near Boyden. He was married to his surviving wife on May 1, 1917. For the past five years the family had lived near Sheldon.

Besides the widow there are left to mourn his untimely death, eight small children, his father and two brothers residing in the Netherlands; and a brother at Timber Lake, S.D.

Deceased was a member in full communion of the First Reformed church, of this city, and funeral services were held there Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock following the service at 1 o’clock in the home. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery.—Sheldon

His death certificate has Leonard Joe Saarloss; born Oct. 26, 1883 in the Netherlands; parents John Saarloss and Marie Bakker; wife Tillie Saarloss; a farmer; died at 1:15 a.m. May 8, 1927; cause, acute appendicitis; contributory cause, acute cardiac dilatation; an operation on April 23, 1927 preceded death; buried May 10 in Sheridan Cemetery, Boyden.

Announcements of his death in De Volksvriend (Leendert or L. J. Saarloos), and his entry in the Sioux County Cemetery Index (L. J. Saarloos) confirm the spelling of his surname as Saarloos. The Boyden newspaper for the first half of May is missing.

A family tree on Ancestry.com has Leendert Joe “Leonard” Saarloos, born 1883 in Reusel-de Mierden, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands; died 8 May 1927 in Sheldon; wife Tillie Burgers (1895-1988); children include William E. (b. 1913), Harriet Maria (1919-1920), Gilbert Henry (1921-2002), Elmer Frederick (1924-1992).
