Hugh Wilson Martin was born on July 16, 1945, in Thomaston, Georgia, the son of Hugh W. and Dorothy (Warren Bean) Martin, Sr. He was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from the Myers Park High School. He then attended the University of South Carolina for two years.

On August 31, 1975, he married Dorothy “Dottie” (Deas) Burke, in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Mr. Martin made his home in Thomaston, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, Savannah Beach, Georgia, Rock Hill, South Carolina, Hartley, Iowa, and in 2014, settled in Orange City, Iowa. He was the owner and operator of a cleaning service in Rock Hill for 28 years, employing up to one hundred people. He also drove for Rides Transportation Service and served in a group home at Village Northwest, both in Sheldon, Iowa.

Hugh was a member of Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church in Orange City and dearly loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as well as his brothers and sisters of the faith. He was a personable, social man who loved to converse and joke around. He enjoyed shooting guns, watching football, fishing with friends, and was interested in politics and theology as well as investing. He loved to share fond memories of his mother and of his wife and the dogs they owned together. He enjoyed southern food and was proud of his southern heritage.

Mr. Martin passed away at age 72 on Friday, December 29, 2017, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dottie.

Survivors include his step-son and wife, Bruce and Casie Burke, of Greenville, South Carolina; a brother and his wife, David M. and Barbara Martin, and nephew David Jr. and niece Misty Martin, all of Ocean City Isle Beach, North Carolina.

There will be a memorial service at 7:00 on Wednesday evening, January 3, 2018, at Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church, 209 1st St. NE, Orange City with an open mic time to share any honoring memories of Hugh.

Memorials may be directed to the church to help with final expenses.
