From the Boyden Reporter, February 18, 1937:

Roscoe Creswell, aged 49, committed suicide in the garage on his farm by hanging on Monday morning. He was last seen that morning when he took his children to school in Boyden. No reason could be given for the act.

He is survived by his widow; three children; his mother, Mrs. Mary Creswell; and a sister, Mrs. Chris Reimers; and a brother, Arthur, in Washington. Owing to the bad condition of the roads, funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Chris Reimers on Thursday afternoon.

From the Hawarden Independent, February 25, 1937:

Roscoe Creswell, 49, of Boyden, committed suicide Feb. 15th by hanging himself in a machine shed on his farm. No reason is known why he committed the rash act. Mr. Creswell had just returned from taking has children to school and his wife thought he had gone to town. She entered the shed to get some fuel and discovered the body of her husband. The rope used was taken from a kerosene tank in the shed. Besides his wife he is survived by three children, his mother, one sister and one brother. He was a brother of the late Attorney Wm. Creswell of Sheldon.

Obituary

Roscoe Creswell, son of Ulysses and Mary Creswell, was born June 27, 1888 on a farm south of Boyden, Iowa. He passed away at his home south of Boyden, Iowa, February 15, 1937, aged 48 years, 7 months and 18 days.

He grew to young manhood in the home community attending the country school and two years at the Boyden High School. He spent all his life near Boyden with the exception of two years spent in Minnesota and North Dakota. In 1918 he started to farm with his mother on the farm where he resided until his death.

He was married to Jennie Olson at Bemidji, Minn., Aug. 20, 1925. To this union four children were born: Hazel Marie, deceased; Ceil, Beaulah and Curtis.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Mrs. Jennie Creswell; two sons, Ceil and Curtis, and one daughter Beaulah, his mother Mrs. Mary Creswell, of Boyden; one brother Arthur, of Portland, Oregon; and one sister, Mrs. Zoa Reimers, of Boyden, Iowa.

The funeral was from the country home of Chris Reimers, Boyden, Iowa, conducted by the pastor of the Boyden United Presbyterian Church, with interment in the Boyden cemetery.

Notices in probate give his full name, Irl Roscoe Creswell.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as I. Roscoe Creswell.

His death certificate adds his parents’ full names, Ulysses Primm Creswell, born Iowa, and Mary Graham, born Illinois.

His World War I draft registration card describes him as of medium height, medium build, light blue eyes, and black hair.
