Death of an Ireton Pioneer

Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, a pioneer of Ireton, passed away at her home here a few minutes after noon last Friday, Sept. 10th, following an illness of several months. Funeral services were held from the home at 1:30 and from the M. E. Church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon with Rev. Wm. P. Webb, the pastor, in charge. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Elizabeth Jane Chenhall was born at Mineral Point, Wis., June 14, 1857, and so had reached the advanced age of 69 years, 2 months and 27 days at the time of her death. In 1878 she came to Iowa with her parents. She was united in marriage with Thomas H. Walker, Feb. 22, 1880, and this union was blessed with one daughter and three sons. The daughter passed away in infancy and one son, David, met death by drowning in 1901. Her husband preceded her in death 33 years ago when he was suddenly taken from the head of the family. She was converted in early childhood and at an early age she became identified with the church of her choice but later in life she became identified with the Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Charles of Philip, S.D. and Philip of Ireton.

MRS. ELIZABETH WALKER

Mrs. Elizabeth Chenall Walker was born at Mineral Point, Wis., June 14, 1857, and came as a child to Sioux County with her parents, and homesteaded on a farm east of Ireton. In 1880 she became the bride of Mr. Thomas Walker. Four children were born to this union. Her life was marked by tragedies. The first child and only daughter passed away after a brief illness of Diphtheria in infancy. Thirty three years ago her husband was instantly killed at a railroad grade crossing east of Ireton while bringing lumber home for their new home. Eighteen years ago the son, David, lost his life while in the Sioux river at Hawarden. The two sons that remain to mourn the loss of a loving mother are Philip, of Ireton and Chas. Walker of Philip S.D.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church. The remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband and children in the St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery east of Ireton.

LIVED MORE THAN 50 YRS. AT IRETON

Mrs. Elizabeth Walker, aged 69, died at her home Friday at 12:30 P.M. of dropsy. She was a pioneer of this community, arriving over 50 years ago, Her husband, T. H. Walker was accidentally killed by a train in 1894. She is survived by two sons, Chas. Walker of Philip, S.D., and Philip Walker of Ireton, two grandsons, 4 sisters and one brother, John Chenhall. A little daughter passed on after a serious illness and a young son was drowned in the Sioux river while attending school at Hawarden. The brave mother was sustained by her faith through these troubles. She was a good neighbor and never failed to do her part for church and community. Six of her nephews were pallbearers at the funeral, which was held Monday from the M. E. church. Rev. Wm. P. Webb preached the sermon. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Walker; born June 14, 1857 at Mineral Point, Wisconsin; parents Stephen Chenhall and Jane Truan, both born in England; resident of Ireton 17 years 6 months; died September 10, 1926 at 12:30 p.m.; cause, cancer of bowels complicated with myocarditis; buried September 13, St. Johns Cemetery, Reading Township.
