Josina Bergsma Van Veldhuizen Age 93

Josina Bergsma Van Veldhuizen, 93, Sheldon, died Tuesday, June 14, 2005, at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in Hull. Services were Friday, June 17, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon with the Rev. Gordon Bloemendaal officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sanborn.

Josina Bergsma Van Veldhuizen, daughter of Henry William and Cornelia (Van Waart) Krommenhoek, was born October 21, 1911, in Sioux City, where she lived her youth and received her education.

She lived and worked in Sioux City until she married D.H. (Homer) Bergsma on October 20, 1936, in Sioux City. They made their home in Sheldon, where they owned and operated Bergsma's Jewelry Store. The couple had two children, James and Coreen.

Mr. Bergsma died in 1974. She later married Henry Van Veldhuizen and then enjoyed 11 years of marriage until his death in 1993. She then lived at the Christian Retirement Home and the Bee Hive assisted living facility, both in Sheldon. Most recently, she had resided at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home. She was a member of First Reformed Church. She loved the Lord and was an active Bible scholar and prayer warrior. Her family and friends benefited from her devotion, wisdom, and love.

Survivors include two children, James and Marjorie Bergsma of Tucson, AZ, and Rock Valley, and Coreen and John Van Sloten of Rock Valley; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Nellie Magneson of Sioux City; a brother, Martin and Francis Krommenhoek of Los Alamos, NM; four stepchildren, Ivan and Harriet Van Veldhuizen of Sanborn, Jeane Van Veldhuizen of Sanborn, Esther and Robert Zonnefeld of Sibley and Marilyn and Dale De Boer of Sibley; and step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, D H. (Homer) Bergsma and Henry Van Veldhuizen; four sisters, Elizabeth, Martha, Cora and Marian; a brother, Henry Krommenhoek; and a stepson. Gene Van Veldhuizen. Memorials may be directed to the World Home Bible League.
