Raymond Kokenge, 62, Granville, died as a result of a flash fire in his home around noon Monday, according to authorities.

Kokenge died Tuesday of burn wounds to approximately 80 percent of his body at the St. Luke’s Burn Treatment Unit, Sioux City.

Local authorities who helped with the investigation reported that Kokenge bolted from his house on fire and that by the time he had gotten outdoors, fire had burned everything except the elastic band on his shorts.

A state fire marshal investigation by Jerry Corbett, Spencer, revealed that the flash fire started when nearby hot plate ignited gasoline vapors and gasoline cans.

Corbett said an investigation following the incident indicated that Kokenge was cleaning brushes when the incident happened.

There was major fire damage to the Kokenge residence, where he apparently lived by himself, according to Corbett

The Granville rescue unit transported Kokenge to the Orange City Hospital, and he was later transferred by ambulance to the burn treatment center at St. Luke’s.

Note: His parents are Joseph and Catherine (Kellen) Kokenge.
