Mrs. Barbara Pals, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2017, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00am, at the Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City. Pastor Timothy Magnuson will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:30pm on Friday, with the family present from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, at the funeral home.

There will also be an informal memorial service on Monday, November 20, at 1:00pm, at the Grace Point Church in New Brighton, Minnesota.

Barbara JoAnn was born on October 1, 1931, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Gunnard and LaBonna “Bonnie” (Fellwock) Carlson. She was raised in Sioux City, where she graduated from Central High School. She then attended Bethel College, in St. Paul, Minnesota, for two years, and later attended Northwestern College, in Orange City, to complete her social work degree.

On October 19, 1951, she married Clifford H. Pals in Sioux City. They were married for eighteen years.

“Barb” made her home in Sioux City, Santa Monica, California, Roseville and Plymouth, Minnesota, and Orange City. She was the first social worker hired by the Orange City Municipal Hospital. She also worked as a social worker for Sioux County but spend most of her career at Covenant Village in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Barb was a member of the Grace Point Church in New Brighton, Minnesota, where she participated in Bible studies and enjoyed anything involving people. Her hobbies included reading, counted cross-stitch, and praying for her family and friends. She always wanted to get to know peoples’ stories and to help them with any of their problems

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Peggy and Larry Vande Brake, of Orange City; Rick and Kathy Pals, of Hugo, Minnesota; Jeff and Kristina Pals, of Chandler, Arizona; and Thomas and Miki Pals, of Japan; a daughter-in-law, Dr. Cynthia Pals, of Orange City; fifteen grandchildren, and their spouses, Jason and Danyelle Vande Brake; Justin Vande Brake; Jordan Vande Brake; Jennie and Jesse Kroese; Samara and Andy Cramer; Brande Pals; Zachary Pals; Schuyler Pals; Malia and Ben Pate; Christopher and Karen Pals; Andrea and Brad Reiderer; JT and Ashley Pals; Heather and Ryan Garcia; Darren Pals; and Anna Marie Pals; nine great-grandchildren, Cole and Kendall Vande Brake; Jaxson and Brooklyn Vande Brake; Desmond and Lydia Pals; Kara and Emma Garcia; and Isaiah Pate; and a sister, Beverly Magnuson, of Roseville. She is also survived by three of Cliff’s four siblings, and their spouses, whose love and friendship supported Barb through her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Cliff; a son, Steven; a grandson and his wife, Jamison and Kathryne Pals; and three great-grandchildren, Ezra, Violet, and Calvin Pals.
