From the Alton Democrat, May 14, 1926, Rock Valley news:

Word was received here Thursday of the death of John Casper Vitzhum of Sioux City and former resident here.

Mr. Vitzhum died on Wednesday evening after a long illness with cancer having attained the age of sixty years and up to the time of his death was proprietor of [a] general insurance, real estate and farm loan business.

Mr. Vitzhum was a former mayor of Rock Valley being very much interested in civic matters as well as his business here in Rock Valley.

His wife preceded him many years ago. He is survived by a daughter, Dorothy and a son, John, Jr., both of Sioux City and one sister, Mrs. J. R. Fulkerson of Portland, Oregon.

The funeral services were held at the Westcott funeral chapel, the sermon being delivered by Rev. Robert S. Flockhart and interment made in Graceland Park cemetery.

FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

J. C. Vitzthum, a former well-known resident of Rock Valley, died at his home in Sioux City last Wednesday night, aged sixty years. Mr. Vitzthum was one of the early residents of Rock Valley and lived here for several years before moving to Sioux City, some fifteen years ago. He conducted an insurance and real estate office here. He took an active part in business and political affairs of the town and community.

Mr. Vitzthum is survived by a son, John Jr., and a daughter, Dorothy, both of Sioux City, and one sister, Mrs. Fulkerson, of Portland, Oregon.

Funeral services were held in Sioux City.

His death certificate has John Casper Vitzthum, 2320 Pierce Street, Sioux City; widowed, wife’s name not given; born October 22, 1865 in Illinois; parents Casper Vitzthum, born in Germany, and Anna Iverson, born in Denmark; died May 6, 1926, at 1 a.m.; cause, carcinoma tongue, duration 6 months; contributory cause, injury by teeth; buried in Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City.
