From the Rock Valley Bee, April 16, 1926:

REV. G. W. SHIDLER DIED SUNDAY OF HEART FAILURE

Rev. George W. Shidler, pastor of the Methodist church at Hull, died very suddenly of heart failure at about three o’clock Sunday afternoon. He was apparently in his usual health until a few moments before he was stricken. He preached as usual in the Methodist church at Hull Sunday morning. After dinner he was in his home talking to his wife when he suddenly passed away.

Rev. Shidler was born in Ohio, June 30, 1859. He came with his parents to Lake City, Iowa, when he was seven years old, and has been a resident of Northwest Iowa since that time.

Besides holding the pastorate at Hull for the past two years Rev. Shidler has served as pastor in Methodist Churches in several different places in Northwest Iowa. He has served at Kingsley, Sloan, Hinton, Havelock and other places. Rev. Shidler has been in Rock Valley several times, and has spoken in the Methodist Church on different occasions. He spoke here some four weeks ago.

Besides a widow, Rev. Shidler is survived by a daughter, Mrs. E. E. Watson, of Sioux City; two sons, Marion Shidler, a student at Morningside college, Sioux City, and Charles Shidler, of Minneapolis, Minn., four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were conducted at 10 o’clock Wednesday morning at Hull and at 2:30 o’clock at Graceland park chapel, Sioux City. Rev. Mr. Arrasmith, superintendent of the Sheldon district of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and Rev. Frank E. Mossman, president of Morningside college conducted the services.

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), April 16, 1926:

M. E. PASTOR DIES

The community was shocked Sunday afternoon to hear of the sudden death of Rev. G. W. Shideler, pastor of the local Methodist church. He had preached his regular morning sermon and stayed for Sunday school, returning to his home shortly after twelve o’clock. He seemed in the best of spirits and little did the congregation think that within a couple of short hours he would be no more. He died sitting in an arm chair, visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Stamper who had called to spend the afternoon. Heart failure was the cause of his death.

Rev. Shideler was a good man. He was loved by all who knew him and the church has sustained a great loss. His works among us will always live in our memories. He had been in the ministry thirty-three years, was head of the Anti-Saloon League of Sioux City for years and pastor of the charges at Havelock, Sloan, Hinton and Kingsley, previous to coming to Hull. Much sympathy is felt here for the bereaved relatives.
