DEATH OF EGBERT VELDKAMP

Egbert Veldkamp died suddenly at his home in Rock Valley Friday morning, March 19. He was just finishing eating his breakfast when he suddenly passed away.

Egbert Veldkamp was born March 17, 1850 in Overysel, Holland, where the greater part of his life was spent. He came with his family to this country in 1910, and farmed in this vicinity until about six years ago, when he moved to Rock Valley.

Besides his wife he leaves children as follows: Mrs. De Groet, Inwood; Mrs. Gerb Van’t Hull, Rock Valley; Ben Veldkamp, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. John Kooima, Woodstock, Minn.; Arend Veldkamp, of Valley Springs, S.D.; and Bert Veldkamp of Inwood.

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley Monday afternoon and the remains were taken to the Hull Cemetery for burial.

Engbert Veldkamp passed away suddenly at his home Friday mornng. Mr. Veldkamp had reached the ripe old age of 76 years and 2 days. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Reformed church. Rev. H. Colenbrander of Orange City assisted Rev. R. D. Douwstra, the local pastor, with the services. Mr. Veldkamp had a host of friends and was loved by those who knew him best. Burial took place in the Hope cemetery at Hull, Iowa.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Engbert Veldkamp.

His death certificate has Egbert Veldkamp, retired farmer; born March 17, 1850 in Holland; parents Ben Veldkamp and Fannie Keullen; wife Grace Veldkamp; resided in the U.S. 17 years and Rock Valley 6 years; died March 19, 1926 at 8 A.M., having been attended by Dr. Huizenga since Jan. 30, 1926; cause, acute dilitation of stomach; contributory cause, gastritis.

Grace was his second wife. The Sioux County marriage register for 1912/1913 has Egbert Veldkamp, age 63, Rock Valley farmer, born in Kamperveen, Overijsel, Netherlands, parents Berend Veldkamp and Fennigje Van Keulen, marrying Grietje Noordstra, age 47, of Perkins, Iowa, born in Dragten, Vriesland, Netherlands, parents Teunis Noordstra and Jeltje Gerritsma, in Rock Valley on 8 Oct. 1912; second marriage for both.

The 1910 U.S. census has Egbert Veldkamp, age 60, born in Holland, a farmer (renting); wife Allis or Allie (51), married 25 years, mother of 13 children, 7 living; daughter Fannie (22); sons Barend (19), Egbert (13), and Alt (9); all immigrated in 1909.

The Netherlands Civil Marriage Index (WieWasWie) has Engbert Veldkamp, age 34, parents Berend Valdkamp[?] and Fennigje van Keulen, marrying Aaltje de Leeuw, daughter of Gerrit de Leeuw and Engeltje van der Stouwe, in Doornspijk on 12 June 1884.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index shows Aaltje Veldkamp, 1858-1911, h: E., buried in Hope Cemetery, Hull. No obituary for her has been found.
