Died: 1932

The many Rock Valley friends of Miss Sue A. Kessler were greatly surprised and shocked Sunday morning when the news came from Rock Rapids that she suddenly passsed away. The evening before her death she was apparently in her usual health. She was taken sick at about four o’clock Sunday morning. A doctor was called and he did all he could for her and she seemed to be considerably revived when he left, with instructions to call him in case of a change came within about two hours later, and she passed away at 7:30 A.M.

Miss Kessler was born at Dexter, Iowa, September 21, 1883. Her parents came to Rock Valley two years later and she lived here until she went to Rock Rapids to teach in the public schools at that place twenty one years ago. She taught several years in the Rock Valley public school, going from here to a similar position in Rock Rapids, and while thus employed was chosen county superindent of the public schools of Lyon County and was serving her third term in this position when death claimed her.

Miss Kessler was a graduate of the Rock Valley High School. She attended the State Teachers’ College at Cedar Falls and also the University of Iowa. She was very faithful in the discharge of all her duties and she did much extra work outside of her regular official duties. She was a member of the National Educational Association, and three years ago was a delegate to the National Convention held in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was a member of the Northwest Teachers’ Association and served on the executive committee of this organization for three years. She was an efficient worker in Red Cross work. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter at Rock Valley and also a member of the P.E.O. Society. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Rock Rapids and was a teacher in the Sunday School for several years, and at present was teacher of a class of young men.

Miss Kessler was a woman who was greatly esteemed by all who knew her and her passing is a distinct loss to the community she served so faithfully. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Kessler, Sr., pioneer residents of Rock Valley. Her father died when she was five years old and her mother passed away twelve years ago. Three brothers and one sister have preceded her in death. Three brothers, George W. of Rock Valley; A.W. of Custer, South Dakota; and Howard N. of Murdo, South Dakota; and one sister Mrs. Jennie Hodge, of Fairview, Oklahoma, survive.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Rock Rapids on Wednesday afternoon. The services were largely attended by her friends from all over Lyon and Sioux Counties, and many friends from other parts of the state. The remains were buried in Valley View Cemetery south of Rock Valley.
