Charles E. Hastert, 67, of Alton died Sunday at the Orange City Municipal Hospital, following a lengthy illness. Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. David Hogan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under the direction of the Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen.

Mr. Hastert was born April 2, 1913, at David City, Neb. He was raised there and came to the Alton area in 1936. He farmed in the area until 1943 when he established the Hastert Body and Paint Shop in Alton, which he operated until his death. He married Bernice Jonas June 28, 1941, at Alton. He was a former Alton city councilman and a past volunteer fireman. He was a past member of St. Mary's Church board, past president of the Alton Archery Club and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Rosary Society, the Knights of Columbus of Granville and the Antique Automobile Club of America, Iowa Great Lakes Region.

Survivors include the widow: one son, Charles J. of Green Bay, Wis.; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Mary Ann) Roberts of Palo Alto, Calif., Mrs. Lynn (Jane) Braband of Rochester, N.Y., and Nancy Hastert of Council Bluffs; three grandchildren; two brothers, Donald of Minneapolis and James of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Margaret) Doud of Grand Island, NE.
