Died: May 2, 1950

Anthony Kern, long time Alton resident died at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Le Mars May 2nd at the age of 69. “Tony” (as he was affectionately known to his many friends) had been pack and forth to the hospital a half a dozen times or more within the last year or two for treatment of a heart affliction. He had been up town, however, within a few weeks of his passing, and his family and friends had hoped he would recover from this last attack.

Peter Kern of Moville and Mrs. Fred Reker of Lismore arrived in Alton soon after their brother’s death at 8:15 Tuesday morning and made funeral arrangements. Services will be held Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Church at 9:00 A.M. and the body will be brought to the church chapel this Wednesday afternoon at 5 o’clock, with rosary in the evening.

Anthony Kern was born November 11, 1880 at New Vienna, Iowa and came to Alton as a small boy with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Kern, early settlers here. One of the oldest members of a family of eight, he learned early to make his own way; worked for a time in Minnesota but returned to Alton 22 years ago to care for his father. A dependable worker, he never lacked for a job while able to work. He was of a careful and thrifty disposition and acquired some property in Alton. Recently he has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Starkenburg when not in the hospital.

He is survived by four brothers and three sisters: Ernest, Minneota, Minnesota; John and Otto, Council Bluffs; Peter of Moville; Kate, Mrs. Fred Reker of Lismore, Minnesota; Anna, Mrs. Mike Muller of Graceville, Minnesota; Elizabeth, Mrs. Hiram Collins, Vermillion, South Dakota. One brother died in 1941 as the result of an automobile accident, and another brother in infancy.
