From the Alton Democrat, January 29, 1926:

Mayor L. Schaap Passes On
(Boyden, Iowa.—Special)

L. Schaap, mayor of Boyden, was taken ill early last week with what was thought to be an attack of “grippe” but which later developed into pneumonia of the most critical type, grew steadily worse and on Monday evening at 7 o’clock Mr. Schaap passed beyond. Mr. Schaap had not been in good health the past year and his system was in no condition to battle the attack. His daughter, Mrs. Terrill of Omaha, three sons, Arie of Canada, Pete of Des Moines and Dr. Rube and wife of Pipestone, were all with him and a special nurse gave very attention possible. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Eddy of Indianola arrived Sunday also and were with him to the last.

The funeral of the late Mayor L. Schaap, pioneer of Sheridan township, will be held at the First Reformed church, Boyden, at 2 o’clock this Thursday afternoon, Rev. Stewart of the Presbyterian church conducting the services.

From the Alton Democrat, February 5, 1926, Boyden news:

L. Schaap, mayor of Boyden, was called to his reward Monday evening, January 25, after an illness of a few days duration. The deceased was born at Winkel, Holland, May 3, 1856, and was 69 years, 8 months and 22 days of age at the time of his death. He came to America in 1880 with his wife and two children, Arie and Gertie. He settled in Capel township and farmed for several years. During this time his wife was taken from him by death. In 1885 he was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Vos and to them were born three sons, Otto, who preceded his father to the great Beyond, Peter of Des Moines and Dr. R. Schaap of Pipestone, Minnesota; also one daughter, Minnie, now Mrs. Peter De Valois who lives near Ashton and who was in the hospital at Sheldon with an infant son born January 24, at the time of her father’s death.

Mr. Schaap was town councilman for several years and succeeded W. H. Eddy as mayor which office he held for three years. He was a kind husband, loving father and a respected citizen who will be missed by all. The sorrowing family have the sympathy of the entire community.

From the Boyden Reporter, January 28, 1926:

DEATH SUMMONS MAYOR L. SCHAAP

Mr. Lyzia Schaap, Mayor of Boyden, died Monday evening, Jan. 25, at 7:00 o’clock, after an illness of about a week’s duration, the cause of his death being an attack of indigestion which developed [into] pneumonia. Funeral services were held this afternoon, at 1:30 at the home, and at 2:00 o’clock at the First Reformed church, with Rev. Neil Stewart officiating. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery.

Lyzia Schaap was born in Winkel, Holland, on May 3, 1856, and died at his home in Boyden, Jan. 25th, 1926, being 69 years, 8 months and 22 days of age. With his wife and two children, Arie and Gertie, he came to America in 1880. For several years he engaged in farming in Capel township. During this time his wife passed away and on March 6th, 1885, he was united in marriage to Maggie Vos. Four children were born to this union, Otto (deceased), Peter, Rokus and Minnie.

The family moved to Boyden in 1889. Since moving to town deceased was engaged in the real estate and insurance business. In 1904 he was elected on the town council, and served for six years. Three years ago this winter he was made mayor of Boyden, and served faithfully in this capacity until his death. Mr. Schaap was a very good citizen, and was much interested in this town and community, where he had many friends. He also took a keen interest in the political affairs of the country and county, and was well posted in the affairs of our government.

The Reporter extends its sincere sympathy to the bereaved family and relatives.

His death certificate shows him as Lyzia Schaap; born May 3, 1856 in the Netherlands; parents’ names not known to the informant, Arie Schaap (whose address is given as Hoven, So. Dak.); resident of the United States 45 years and of Boyden 35 years; profession, real estate; wife Maggie Schaap; died January 25, 1926 at 7 p.m.; cause, heart failure due to arteriosclerosis, complicated by pneumonia; buried in Sheridan Cemetery, Boyden.
