Ireton boy of 9 dies after bicycle mishap

A 9-year-old Ireton youth died Tuesday afternoon in a Hawarden hospital from injuries sustained Monday when the bicycle he was riding collided with livestock truck six miles northwest of Ireton

Funeral services for David Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Baker of Ireton, have been tentatively set for Friday afternoon at the Mauer Funeral home in Le Mars.

David was taken to the Hawarden hospital following the accident which occurred shortly after noon Monday. The lad was riding on his bicycle on the road near his home when he ran into a stock truck loaded with hogs owned by the H. Koopman Trucking Service and driven by Thomas Muth. The truck had stopped at the intersection when the boy, evidentially not seeing it, struck the truck near the center, throwing him into the ditch. The truck driver said he tried to swerve the truck when he saw the boy coming but could not get it moved out of the way in time.

The Baker youth was immediately rushed to the hospital where it was found he suffered facial fractures, shock and was unconscious. He died at about 4 p.m. Tuesday without regaining consciousness.

David was born Christmas Day, 1951 at Ireton. He is survived by his parents, two brothers and a younger sister; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Hora Rexroat of Sioux City and his paternal grandmother Mrs. Kenneth Baker of LeMars.
