Ms. Sharon Skoglund, age 75, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial prayer service on Tuesday, October 10, at 6:00pm, at the Living Water Community Church in Orange City. The Rev. Jason Van Wyk will officiate. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Sharon Kay was born on February 21, 1942, in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of Leland and Irma Irene (Dodd) Johnson. She was raised in Fairfield and Winterset, Iowa, two blocks from John Wayne’s birthplace. She earned her associates degree in social work.

On September 27, 1958, she married Kenneth R. Skoglund in Maquoketa, Iowa. He passed away on March 31, 1993, in Trenton, Missouri, after more than 34 years of marriage. In May of 2000, she formalized her relationship with her companion, Ronda Schroeder.

Besides Iowa, Sharon lived in Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. In 2014, she moved to Orange City.

In addition to being a homemaker, she was an owner and operator of a bakery, a waitress, and a secretary at the college in Oglesby, Illinois, and at the Bank of America in Kansas City, Missouri.

Sharon was a member of the Living Water Community Church. She supported the Indians at Standing Rock on Facebook.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, hiking, listening to the rain, reading, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her companion of more than 23 years; two daughters, Susan Kaye Vahl, of Ashton, Iowa; and Jane Ann Skoglund, of Orange City; a daughter-in-law, Becky McEmery; grandchildren, Judith, and her husband, Chris Phelps; Barbara, and her husband, Nick Nelson; James Skoglund, and his wife Kaylean; Joshua Skoglund; Danielle Vahl; Paula Skoglund; Elyse Skoglund; Elijah Skoglund; and Chris Claessen; thirteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna McKee; and a niece, Debbie McKee Moss.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents; and a son-in-law, Dale Vahl.

Memorials may be directed to an organization that fights the abuse of women, children, or animals.
