Mrs. Margaret Hubers, age 89, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, October 7, at 10:30am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Dr. Brian Keepers and the Rev. Donald Lenderink will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

The words “she was a special person” are often expressed by family and friends speaking about Margaret Annette (Bastemeyer) Hubers, who died peacefully in her sleep after a short illness. She was special to the elementary students she taught at the Onawa Elementary school after graduating from Northwestern Junior Academy in Orange City just after World War II, as well as to the Title 1 students at Catholic schools in Alton and Granville in the sixties and seventies.

She was special to the Laotian refugee family who were hosted by Trinity Reformed Church in the seventies, as she became like a member of their family rather than just someone doing charity work. At that time she was serving on Trinity’s Christian Action committee, which she did less as a political statement than an act of Christian compassion for the less fortunate. Her heart, in fact, was often focused on the less fortunate, when it wasn’t focused on family.

In many different ways to many different people in her capacity as teacher and mentor and friend, she was a rock to those who stood on otherwise shaky foundations, a kind and unfailing support for those seeking a shoulder to cry on or a comforting presence to get them through rough patches in their lives.

And, of course, she was special to her family. One of her nephews by marriage, a Presbyterian pastor in Virginia, summed up why with these words: “Unfailingly polite, constantly looking out for the needs of others, always cognizant of the presence of God in her life - the kind of person I hope to be when I grow up.” This is who she was to her husband of 59 years, Henry Dale Hubers, who preceded her in death by eight and a half years; to her brother, Norman Bastemeyer (Carol) of West Des Moines as well as her half brother, Robert Vis (Marcia), who preceded her in death by twenty years; to her children: Barbara Hubers-Drake (Mark), from Seattle, Washington; Dr. John Hubers (Lynne), from Orange City; and James Hubers (Laura Comito), from Carroll; as well as to her grandchildren: Andrew Drake (Lisa), John Drake (Lauren), and Margo Drake, all from Seattle; Jennifer Lavery (Dr. Todd), in North Africa; Adam Hubers, from Royal Oak, Michigan; Dr. Vanessa Jewell (Mark) and Shawna Nepple (Kevin), from Omaha, Nebraska, whose recent death was a source of great grief to Margaret; and Alex Hubers from Cedar Rapids and Mathew Hubers from Des Moines. Her eight great grandchildren, even those too young to be able to form significant memories of her, also have been deeply touched by her gracious, giving nature.

She is and will continue to be greatly missed by the many whose lives were touched by her gentle spirit, even as they take comfort and hope knowing that she has gone to that place where there is no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain (Rev. 21: 4), eternally home with her heavenly Father, who has been her rock and source of hope throughout her long well-lived life.
