Richard Karssen, former Boyden resident died in Sioux City Thursday evening, February 3rd at the age of 41 years, 1 month and 20 days. He had been in declining physical condition since March 21, 1954, following an accident in the garage where was employed.

Richard Clarence Karssen was born December 14, 1913 to Everet and Edith Karssen at Boyden, Iowa, where he spent his boyhood. Later, the family moved to Leota, Minnesota. In 1923 the family moved to Pease, Minnesota and for some time he lived at Milaca, Minnesota.

Richard was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. Since the war he and his wife have lived mostly in Sioux City. Since September he was confined to bed in the devoted care of his wife, and was twice hospitalized.

Surviving are his wife Janice; one daughter Viola of Milaca, Minnesota; a stepson, Alfred; three brothers: Gerrit of Alton, Iowa, Ed of Hawarden, William of Chandler, Minnesota; one sister, Marie, Mrs. Tony Kooiman of Ogilvie, Minnesota. His parents and two sisters, Rena and Bertha, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday at 1:30 P.M. at the J. W. Allen Funeral Home in charge of Reverend LeRoy Sandee and Reverend Stanley Krischwitz of Hawarden. Music was furnished by Mesdames John Fennema and Don Freriks who sang “Going Down the Valley” and “Beyond the Sunset.” Six nephews served as pallbearers. Interment was in Nassau Township Cemetery.

Many relatives were present from Minnesota and Iowa, besides many local friends of the Karssen family. Friends from out-of-state included Mr. and Mrs. John A. Schmidt of Edgerton, Joe and Leonard Eggink of Chandler, Minnesota.
