Hold Last Rites For John Weimer Tuesday Morning

Funeral services for John Weimer, 75, were held Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s church, with Rev. David McGoey officiating. Burial was made at the local cemetery. Mr. Weimer died in his sleep Saturday night [October 9]. He had been active right up to the night of his death.

Mr. Weimer was born at Waterford, Wisconsin, in November, 1872. He spent his childhood and youth there and at the age of 28 came to the Rock Valley area, where he engaged in farming for a number of years. In 1923 he moved to town and for the past 25 years worked as an employee of the town of Rock Valley.

As weighmaster Mr. Weimer was a well known figure here. In charge of the town scale since 1927, he became acquainted with just about every farmer in this area. One of his duties was to operate the siren and regularly at seven, noon, one o’clock and at six p.m., he pulled the time signal. Even after the scale was discontinued, he continued to perform this four-times daily rite.

Survivors include two first cousins, Mrs. A. F. Schemmer and Will Richter of Rock Valley and several half sisters and half brothers, now residing in Wisconsin and west coast states. Mr. Weimer more recently lived at the Mrs. Maybell McElroy home.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Weiner, John, b. 1872 d. 1948, St Marys Cem Rock Valley IA. This surname spelling is an error. FindaGrave.com has it as Weimer, with a photo of his headstone.

The 1920 census for Rock Valley shows him living with his brother William and family; the occupation of both is drayman. There are advertisements in the Rock Valley Bee in the late 1910s for Weimer Bros., proprietors of Acme Dray Line.
