Mrs. Catherine Callan Passes Away During the Week
Mrs. Catherine Callan, one of the pioneers of this community passed away last Friday, Nov 9th. at the home of her daughter Mrs. C. E. Sawyer, after an illness of long duration. Funeral services were held Monday at the Catholic church in this city, Rev. Fr. Masterson conducting the last sad rites. A large concourse of friends and neighbors attended the funeral.

Catherine McIntee was born at Reading PA., Jan 1 1886. At the age of 11 years she moved with her parents to Viroqua, WI, where her parents engaged in farming. At the age of 18 she was untied in marriage to Michael Callan and continued living on a farm in that vicinity the first few years of her married life.. Her husband was called to defend his country at the outbreak of the Civil war, leaving her the sole care and livelihood of four small children. At the close of the war her husband returned to her broken in health. They moved to Ossian IA in 1867 and remained there until 1870 when the moved to Dakota Territory and homesteaded near where the town of Alcester now stands. In 1888 she and her husband retired from the farm, moving to Sanborn IA, where they remained two years and then moved to Hawarden. Her husband died in 1891. She was the mother of eight children, six of whom still survive. The are John Callan of Grangeville ID; Mrs. Anna Vasser of Mason City IA; Mrs. C. E. Sawyer and M. C. Callan of Hawarden; Edw. J. Callan of San Francisco; Eugene Callan of Beaver Crrk, MN. The eldest daughter Mary died in infancy and Joseph died in March 1910.

Catherine Callan was a grand Christian woman and a devout member of the Catholic church. In the early days of pioneer life in Dakota Territory she was ever ready to help or administer to sick or needy and her kind and loving deeds endeared her to her neighbors and friends. The last few years she has been a patient sufferer from a complication of disease, but bore it gently, waiting the summon of her Maker.

Among the relatives and friends from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Ed. Mclntee, a brother, of Ellendale, N. D.; Mrs. Anna Vassar of Mason City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Callan of Beaver Creek, Minn.; Mrs. Jas. Fennessey and Mrs. Harry Harrison of Beresford SD.
