Larchwood miss dies beneath trailer wheel

Lyon county had a particularly sad fatal accident Saturday evening, an accident in which 14 year old Wilma Ann Langstraat was killed The accident occurred in the drive way of a farm about a mile south of the junction of highways 9 and 26, south of Larchwood at about 6:30 p.m.
Wilma had gone with her father, Clarence, to the place to feed some cattle. Although the Langstraats live a mile south of the farm in which the accident occurred, Mr. Langstraat farmed and conducted feeding operations at the other place.

Wilma was reported standing in the back of the pickup, and as the vehicle made the slow turn into the driveway, evidently lost her balance, falling directly in front of one of the rubber-tired wheels of the trailer, which passed over her head. Her father felt the impact, discovered what had happened, and at once went for help. However, her death was listed as probably instantaneous.

The Langstraats live about four miles south of Larchwood on highway 26 and have their home there for the past 10 years.

Besides the parents, Wilma is survived by two brothers,Henry and Larry, and three sisters, Ellen, Helen and Janice, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Vanden Top of Inwood, her paternal grandfather at Carmel and one great grandparent.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Porter Funeral home in Rock Valley, with the Rev. John Van Zweden of the Netherlands Reformed church, officiating.

Interment will be in Richland cemetery with James, Gilbert and Gerrit Van Den Top, Harvey Burggraaf, Wilmer Langstraat and William Schelling serving as bearers.
Wilma was born December 16, 1946 at Sioux Center and was an eighth grade student in the West Lyon South school at Inwood. She lived with her family in Carmel for four years before
they moved to Larchwood. She attended church and Sunday school at the Netherlands Reformed church in Rock Valley.
