From the Boyden Reporter, April 16, 1925:

JOHN ADAM STUTZMAN.

John Adam Stutzman was born in Illinois on the 5th day of January, 1866 and died at his home in Boyden, on April 8th, 1925, at 7:30 p.m., being 59 years, 3 months and 3 days of age. Funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon, April 11th, at the house with Rev. Neil Stewart officiating; and the services at the cemetery were conducted by the Masonic order of Sheldon, of which deceased was a member. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery.

In the year of 1894 deceased was united in marriage to Emma Belling and to this union two children were born, a daughter and son. The daughter, Beulah, preceded her father in death several years ago. He is survived by his wife, the son Lloyd, two brothers and three sisters, who are: L. F. Stutzman, of Britton, S.D.; Fred Stutzman, of Winner, S.D.; Mrs. Sarah Arnold and Mrs. John Jones, of Vernon, Ill., and Mrs. J. D. Young, of Chattanooga, Okla., and a number of other relatives.

Mr. Stutzman was for many years a resident of Sioux county and Boyden, being engaged in the live stock and meat market business here, of which he made a good success. He was well and favorably known by the Commission firms of Sioux City and Sioux Falls as he has shipped many carloads of stock to the market as a member of the firm of Stutzman & Conner. He also was extensively interested in farming, and of late years was connected with the Stutzman Drug Co. He came to Boyden when he was yet an infant and has assisted in its growth to the present day. He was a member of the Masonic order at Sheldon. He will be greatly missed by his loved ones and many friends in this community.

Young, of Chattanooga, Okla.; Mrs. Louise Wolf, Mr. and Mrs. M. Oester, Mr. and Mrs. John Wolf, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wolf, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hansen and Mr. Fred Belling, all of Sheldon; Mr. and Mrs. Wess Beckman and children and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Belling and children, of Chandler, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Douglas, Miss Carrie Douglas and Delbert and Orval Douglas, of Dexter, Ia.; Mr. Ed Young, of Walnut, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brown, of Spencer, Ia.; and Mr. Harry Stutzman, of Winner, S.D.

From the Alton Democrat, April 17, 1925, Boyden news:

EARLY BOYDEN SETTLER DIES—J. STUTZMAN
Veteran Stock Boyer Dies After Short Illness

J. A. Stutzman, prominent resident of Boyden since the early history of the town, passed to the beyond April 8th at 6:25 following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Stutzman submitted to an operation several weeks age at which time it was discovered his condition was much more serious than had been expected. Everything possible was done for his comfort, but nothing availed. The immediate members of the family spent the last days with the deceased. Funeral services were conducted from the home Saturday afternoon at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev. Neil Stewart, interment in the Boyden cemetery with the Masonic order in charge.

Mr. Stutzman was born in Illinois Jan. 5, 1866 and grew to manhood in Iowa with the exception of a few years during which he lived in Texas. He came to Boyden in the early days of Sioux County and has been identified in the stock business for many years. He at one time owned the meat market and for the past five years has been connected with the Stutzman and Conner Drug store.

His death certificate gives his parents’ names, Christian Henry Stutzman, born in Germany, and Caroline Swingle, born in Ohio. Died April 8, 1925 at 7:30 p.m., having been attended by his doctor since January 1, 1925. Cause, [illegible] carcinoma; secondary[?] involvement[?] of pancreas; preceded by an operation, March 1, 1925 [although newspaper news notes indicate that he was operated on in early February, and returned to the Cram hospital in Sheldon in March for electrical treatments].
