From the Hawarden Independent, November 6, 1924:

DEATH OF PROMINENT FARMER
Remko Kooi Passed Away Last Friday at His Home Near Lebanon

Remko Kooi, one of Garfield township's most widely known citizens, passed away at his home, a mile west of the Lebanon church, last Friday noon following an illness of about six weeks from heart trouble. Funeral services were held from the home and later from the Christian Reformed church at Lebanon on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Kok, pastor of the church, and interment was made in the Lebanon cemetery.

Remko Kooi was born in Chicago, Ill., July 4, 1864, so was past 60 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Sioux county at the age of 17 years and his home has ever since been here. On Sept. 25, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Drada Kastine and a couple of years later they moved onto the present home farm in Garfield township and have resided there continuously since that time. Ten children were born to them, nine of whom in addition to the widow, survive. One son lost his life by drowning about ten years ago. The children are Mrs. Peter Haverhals, Ben Kooi, Fred Kooi, Mrs. Gerrit Vander Lugt, John Kooi and Mrs. Kate Haverhals, all residing within a few miles of Lebanon, and George, Ellis and Jennie at home.

Mr. Kooi was one of the most prosperous farmers of this section. He had acquired large land holdings in Sioux county and had engaged extensively in the live stock business. He was held in high regard by his neighbors and was one of the real leaders of his community and his death is deeply deplored by hosts of friends outside the immediate family.

From the Alton Democrat, November 8, 1924:

REMKE KOOI; PIONEER GOES TO LAST REST

Remke Kooi of Lebanon who was probably one of the largest land owners in the county, died suddenly at his home last Friday. Mr. Kooi had been unwell for some time but had been about during the morning of the day and went to the house, lay down on the bed and shortly thereafter passed away. Death was due to heart failure. Mr. Kooi grew to manhood in Chicago but felt that the west offered greater opportunities so located in Sioux county where he was a successful farmer. He is survived by his wife and nine children, who all live in the vicinity of Lebanon. Mr. Kooi also is survived by two brothers and one sister still living. The funeral services were held on Monday at Lebanon where interment was made.
