Mr. Harry Bert Vande Stouwe, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, July 5, at 2:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family present will be after 12:30pm on Wednesday at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Harry was born on January 8, 1930, in Tangier, Indiana, the son of Bert and Fay B. (Thompson) Vande Stouwe. He was raised at Hull, where he graduated from the public high school. He also attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He served in the United States Army as a military policeman during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Panama.

On June 12, 1958, he married Esther Dalene Hommes in Luverne, Minnesota. They made their home in Hull, where he was self-employed as a mason. She passed away on August 19, 2005, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after 47 years of marriage.

In February of 2017, he became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Harry was a member of the First Reformed Church and the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull, where he served as commander. He also belonged to the Rock Valley, Alvord, and Rock Rapids Gun Clubs and the National Rifle Association.

He enjoyed bird watching, fishing, gardening, hunting, reading, story telling, and traveling. He visited 49 of the United States, and he was very social, often hosting events.

Survivors include his five daughters, Cindy R. Vande Stouwe, of Alexandria, Virginia; Carmen D., and her husband, Samuel B. Zollman II, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; Shawn R., and her husband R. Dwayne Roberson, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Denise F. Crew, and her husband, David E. McLandsborough, of Castle Rock, Colorado; and Sigrid A. Vande Stouwe, of Alexandria, Virginia; five grandchildren, Samuel B. Zollman III, and his wife, Carrie; Aaron R. Zollman; Katie R., and her husband, Antonio McLemore; Madison L. Crew; and Mallory R. Crew; three great-grandchildren, Braelyn Zollman and Israel and Legacy McLemore; two brothers, Ned Vande Stouwe, and his wife, Jane, and Wendell Kooistra, all of Grinell; and a sister-in-law, Cindy Kooistra, of Sioux Falls.

In addition to his wife and parents, Harry was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Addie M. Vande Stouwe; two brothers Duane Vande Stouwe and Wallace Kooistra; and a sister, Nancy Lammers.

Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church for JeanJean and Kristie Mompremier with United Christians International in Haiti.
