AN AGED MAN GONE
Alvin Wood Passes Away at the Age of 79 Years
His Death Came Suddenly From Heart Failure Brought on by a Previous Illness

Alvin Wood, a resident of Hawarden for more than twenty years, passed away at his home in this city at about 7:30 last Friday evening [April 30] from heart failure. He had been in poor health most of the winter, but had recovered sufficiently to be up and around the house and make occasional trips out upon the street. On the evening of his death he spent an hour or more reading his newspaper and then his wife assisted him to the bed. A few minutes later the final summons came and he passed peacefully away without apparent pain before medical aid could reach him.

The deceased born in Dansville, N.Y., April 21, 1830, and he was 79 years and 9 days old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Juliet [illegible] Nov. 1860, and his wife [illegible] for nearly half a [century] still survives. Three children were born to them, all of whom [are] still living. The children [are] H. L. Wood of Sioux City, [Mrs.] Sabra Brown and Ben [Wood] of Hawarden, also an [adopted child], Mrs. Sadie Clemens of [Minn]eapolis, all of whom were [present] at the funeral service.

[They] resided in New York State [until] 1887 when they removed to Hawarden and have since made this place their home. He led a very active life and was always possessed of indominitable will and energy and was upon the streets of Hawarden only the day before his demise looking after business affairs. He was kind and indulgent to his family and they always had a tender place in his affections.

The funeral service was held at the home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. R. A. Quinn, pastor of the M. E. church. The services were beautiful and impressive and a large number gathered to express their respects and sympathies.
