Josephine "Joann" McArthur Holman

The remains of Mrs. Joseph Holman, who passed away at Long Beach, California, January 19th, were brought to Hawarden Wednesday afternoon and interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery where four of her daughters are buried. Reverend R.J. Cornell, pastor of the Associated Church, offered a short prayer at the grave.

Mrs. Holman was an early day Hawarden resident at which time Mr. Holman was employed as an engineer for the North Western Railway Co. The family moved from here to Eagle Grove more than thirty-five years ago. Mr. Holman was placed on the pension roll of the company about four years ago since which time Mr. and Mrs. Holamn have made their home in California. Mr. Holman still survives but did not accompany the remains here. She is also survived by two daughters, Mrs. Paul Braden of Pekin, Illinois, and Mrs. W.R. Baker of Eagle Grove.

Mrs. Holman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, March 26, 1867. She was united in marriage with Joseph W. Holman June 3, 1884. To this union six children were born, four having preceded their mother to the great beyond.

Joann Holman was very prominent in church, club and social work in Eagle Grove over a long period of years, serving as president of the two women's clubs and was active in many other community welfare organizations. She was particularly active and useful in assisting people from across the seas in preparing themselves to become American citizens. Many a naturalized citizens in this community owes entire credit for becoming a citizen to the painstaking, patient instruction and teaching of Mrs. Joseph Holman.

Accompanying the remains to Hawarden were her daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Baker, and E.R. Baker, of Eagle Grove.
