From the Boden Reporter, January 17, 1924:

FORMER BOYDEN RESIDENT DROWNED WHILE LOGGING

A message was received Wednesday by Mr. T. DeHoogh, of Sheldon, that Fred DeHoogh, a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. J. DeHoogh, of Lynden, Wash., was drowned while logging about 20 miles from Lynden, Wash. At the time the message was dispatched the body had not been recovered. The victim of the accident was about 32 years of age. He is well known in this community, having been a resident here for many years. He made a visit to Boyden last summer, accompanied by his wife. Deceased had been engaged in the lumber business during the past year.

From the Alton Democrat, January 19, 1924, Boyden news:

Dr. Kuyper received a message Wednesday morning stating that Fred De Hoog had been drowned Tuesday morning at Linden, Wash. while working on a log jam. The body had not been recovered when the message was sent and no particulars of the accident were learned as yet.

From the Alton Democrat, January 28, 1924, Boyden news:

Word was received to the effect that the body of Fred DeHoog was located the day following the accident. The funeral services being held Monday at Linden, Wash.

News notes in the Boyden Reporter show D. J. DeHoogh to have been a dairy farmer in the Boyden area for a number of years, and to have sold his farm and moved to Lynden, Washington with his family in 1913.

De Hoogh, born Netherlands, mother Willempje Kuyper, born Netherlands; bride Anna De Boer, residence Lynden, age 21, born Nebraska, occupation teacher, father Gerben De Boer (no birth place), mother Lena van der Griend, born Netherlands; married July 22, 1919.

Also on Ancestry.com is a draft registration card: Fred DeHoogh, home Lynden, Wash.; draft board precinct Whatcom, Wash.; born Sept. 20, 1894 in Garwin, Iowa; farmer, single; medium height and build, blue eyes, brown hair.

From the Jefferson (Iowa) Bee, January 29, 1924, Dana news:

Miss Lena Anderson received a telegram Wednesday from her brother, Jon Martin, who was here during the holidays, that her brother Mr. DeHoogh at Walla Walla, Washington, had drowned. The brother that was here during the holidays left here for Walla Walla to seek employment with his brother in the lumbering camps and was going there to locate. Mr. DeHoogh and his wife visited Lena last summer. It will be remembered Lena's brothers and sisters were adopted into different families hence the different names.
