Martin Hoekstra was born in Berlikurn, Friesland, The Netherlands, May 16, 1856 and in 1914 came to the United States and settled on a farm near Sheldon.

After 10 days illness, he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Vogel at Sheldon. He is survived by 3 sons, Dan and John of Sheldon and Peter of Boyden; five daughters, Mrs. Plantinga of Holland, Michigan, Mrs. C. Steensma of Rochester, New York, Mrs. John Sietstra and Mrs. John Boer of Boyden and Mrs. A. Vogel of Sheldon and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon July 29 in the Protestant Reformed Church with the Reverends B. Kok and A. Camminga in charge.

Note: According to the census, he married Tietje Damstra on May 9, 1889.
