From the Alton Democrat, April 12, 1902, Boyden news:

John Stegeman died at his home north of Boyden on Tuesday April 8, at the age of sixty-four after an illness of only a few weeks. He had always been hearty and strong and the news of his demise came as a shock to the community. The many friends of the bereaved family in this place deeply sympathize with them in their sorrow.

From the Boyden Reporter, April 11, 1902:

J. D. Stegeman, Dead.

Died, J. D. Stegeman, 3-1/2 miles north of Boyden, at his residence Monday morning, April 7th, between the hours of 10 and 11 o'clock a.m. The deceased was 59 years old at the time of his demise, and a farmer by occupation.

The funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church of which he was a member. Rev. Baetke preached the funeral sermon at 2 o'clock p.m. Thursday afternoon, after which the remains were consigned to their last resting place [followed by pious sentiments].

The deceased leaves a loving wife and four children to mourn the untimely loss of this, their beloved parent and father. His sorely stricken family has been called to mourn the loss of two loving young girls and a father--all within the last 4 years. The bereaved family are surely deserving of the sympathy of all, who were worthy of their acquaintance and this was amply shown by the large attendance of mourners that followed the last remains of all that was mortal of this esteemed and beloved man to its last resting place [followed by additional pious sentiments].
