From the Boyden Reporter, October 4, 1923:

MRS. META STEGEMANN

Mrs. Meta Stegemann, nee Schroeder, passed away on Monday afternoon, Sept. 24th, at 2:30 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Steenbergen at the age of 76 years, 10 months and 3 days.

She was born in Germany on the 21st of November, 1846. She was baptized and later on confirmed in the Lutheran faith. On the 8th of August, 1868 she united in holy wedlock with Mr. Jno. Diedrich Stegemann, who passed away in 1902.

Seven children were born to this union of whom two preceded her in death. In 1875 the family left the old country and settled in Muscatine, Iowa, where they resided until 1887 when they moved to Sioux county, near Boyden, on a farm. Here Mr. J. Stegemann died. After the death of her husband, Mrs. M. Stegemann resided for several years in Boyden, but later on sold her property to make her home with her children.

She was always in good health until this spring, when an ailment set in which caused her death. About 3 months ago she came to Sheldon to stay with her daughter here. From that time she grew weaker, week after week. The best care was given her, but it was in vain. On Monday afternoon she fell asleep, leaving to mourn her departure, her children: Hermann Stegemann, Boyden, Ia.; Mrs. H. Richmond, Morrison, Ill.; Mrs. N. Blessing, Sheldon, Ia.; Mrs. E. Steenbergen, Sheldon, Ia.; Mrs. M. Stehrenberg, Rock Valley, Ia. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and many relatives and hosts of friends.

Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at 12:30 here in Sheldon and at the St. John's Lutheran church north of Boyden. The Rev. H. Flentje and W. Badke of Boyden officiated. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. M. Stegemann was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran church of Boyden, a true Christian, a faithful wife to her late husband, a devoted mother of her children and a true friend to many. May she rest in peace and enjoy the everlasting blessings in the realms above.
