From the Rock Valley Bee, August 31, 1923:

S. A. MITCHELL, FORMER RESIDENT DEAD

S. A. Mitchell, a former well-known resident of Rock Valley, who was for several years connected with the First National Bank of Rock Valley, died at his home in Waterloo, Iowa, Monday, August 27, from cancer of the stomach. He had been in poor health for several months.

Mr. Mitchell will be remembered by many residents of Rock Valley and vicinity. He resided here for several years, and was prominent in business and town affairs. He served on the town council for several years. He moved away from here to Oregon about ten or twelve years ago, where he was connected with a banking institution, later going to Waterloo, Iowa, where he resided at the time of his death.

From the Alton Democrat, September 1, 1923:

Stephen A. Mitchell, who was engaged in the banking business with the Large brothers at Rock Valley up to about twelve years ago, died at Waterloo August 27th, at the age of 68 [blurred, possibly 58]. He is survived by his wife and four children ranging in age from 7 to 38[?].

A death certificate on Ancestry.com has Stephen Arnold Mitchell, born November 22, 1862 in Iowa; parents Michael Mitchell and Adelia Cornwall, both born Ireland; occupation farmer; died August 27, 1923 in Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa; cause of death, cancer of stomach and spleen; buried Calvary Cemetery, Waterloo. This is probably, although not definitively, him (note the discrepancy in occupations).

The 1920 U.S. census for Waterloo, Iowa shows Stephen A. Mitchell, age 57, living in Ward 2, Baltimore Street; occupation dairy farmer; parents born Ireland; wife Dorothy M. Mitchell (44); children Arnold (16), Mary H. (14), Corinne K. (10), and Dorothy J. (3-6/12).
