ORANGE D. LEONARD

Mr. Orange D. Leonard was born at Goshem[Goshen], Ohio, on June 22, in the year of 1838, and died at his Boyden, Iowa, home on Thursday, July 19th at 11:30 a.m. at the age of 85 years and 27 days. Funeral services for the deceased was[were] held on Saturday afternoon, July 21st, at 2:00 p.m. at the home, and 2:30 at the United Presbyterian church, with Dr. W. T. McConnell officiating. Interment was made in the Boyden cemetery, just northwest of town.

The subject of this sketch was a native of Ohio. He came to Iowa in the year of 1843 with his parents, brothers and sisters, and resided at Farmington. Later he returned to visit his grandparents in Ohio, and while there the Civil War broke out and he enlisted in the 41 O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry] and served until the end of the war. He was wounded at Nashville, the last battle of the southwest.

On March 1st in the year 1871, he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie DeVault, who was also a native of Ohio. To this union two children were born: Mrs. Henry Work and Charles Leonard of Boyden. He leaves to mourn his death besides his wife, children and grandchildren: one sister, Mrs. Mary E. Lamoreaux, of Los Angeles, Calif. He was one of a family of eleven children.

Deceased came to Lynn township, Sioux county in the year of 1879, being engaged in farming until 1901 when the family moved to Boyden, where they have since made their home. He was a resident of Sioux county for 44 years, and remembered well the hardships of the pioneer days. During latter years he retired from active service and spent his time at home. He was a devoted husband and father and he had many friends. The writer will miss him very much, as he was our most interested reader, never failing to call at the office each week winter and summer for his Reporter. We enjoyed his visits and talks, and especially when he told us of the days of the Civil War.

The funeral was in charge of the local Post of the American Legion and many of its members were present. The pall bearers were Messrs. S. H. DeVries, A. Dean, Civil War veteran; Paul T. McCrum, Rudolph Henning, Robert Moret and William Harman.

Those from out-of-town who attended the funeral were: Mr. Henry Work, Art Work and Harley, from Britton, S.D.; Mrs. S. S. Bailey, Mrs. John Hudson, Mrs. Joe White, Mr. Joe Rider and son James and John Hurd, all of Sheldon. The Reporter wishes to extend to the bereaved family its heartfelt sympathy.
