ROBERT HILTON DIED TUESDAY--PASSED AWAY IN HOSPITAL AT SIOUX FALLS, SOUTH DAKOTA--DEATH RESULTS FROM BLOOD POISONING FOLLOWING OPERATION--FUNERAL TO BE HELD HER FRIDAY

This community was greatly saddened on Tuesday afternoon when word reached here of the death of Robert Hilton which occurred at 2 o’clock that afternoon at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. He had been ill for about three weeks. His death resulted from blood poisoning which followed an operation on his nose. The operation was not regarded as at all serious and he appeared to be getting along nicely when infection set in and the poison spread rapidly through his system, finally reaching his heart, and death ensured.

The remains were brought to Hawarden Wednesday afternoon and taken to Sumners’ undertaking parlors. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon at the Associated Church, in charge of the pastor, Reverend William F. Vance. Interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Robert Thomas Hilton was born in Dubuque, Iowa, October 31, 1875, so was past 48 years of age. In 1883 he moved with his parents to Brule County, South Dakota, where they resided until 1891, when the family came to Hawarden, so that practically all of his mature life has been spent here. For more than twenty years he was engaged in bridge building work in Sioux County, being employed as foremen for W.W. Allen, during the years that Mr. Allen handled most of the Sioux County bridge building contracts. When Mr. Allen retired from this business, Robert engaged in the work on his own account for a number of years. On December 14, 1921, he was united in marriage at Omaha, Nebraska, with Mrs. Margaret Woods of Montrose, South Dakota. They spent that winter in California and the following year at Montrose, after which they moved to Sioux Falls where they have since resided. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his death his aged father, Henry Hilton of this city, two brothers, Roscoe Hilton of Madison, South Dakota and Harry Hilton of Hawarden, three sisters, Mrs. B.F. Mason of Davenport, Iowa, Mrs. J.R. Webb of Fulton, South Dakota and Miss Inez Hilton of Hawarden, and one step-daughter, Mrs. A. DeWald of Montrose, South Dakota.

Few men enjoyed the confidence and esteem of their friends and associates to a greater extent than did Robert Hilton. His dealings were always absolutely on the square and everyone with whom he came in contract looked upon him as a valued friend. He was faithful to every trust imposed upon him and well merited the confidence which everyone placed in him. He was a loyal member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Hawarden and a member of the Presbyterian Church. His passing is deeply mourned by many outside the family circle.
