Death: January 15, 1931

William Hodgson, a resident of Hawarden for the past twenty years, passed away at his home in this city last Thursday noon. He had been in failing health for the past two years but had been critically ill only a few days preceding his death.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Barnard Funeral Home, with Reverend Robert H. Forrester, pastor of the Methodist Church, in charge. Music at the funeral service was provided by the ladies' quartette of the Methodist Church, composed of Mrs. W.S. Weaver, Mrs. John Dawson, Mrs. J. Gus Anderson and Miss Inez Hilton, with Mrs. Earl Slife as accompanist. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery.

William Hodgson was born December 31, 1856, at Clarksville, Iowa, and died January 15, 1931, at the age of 74 years and 15 days. With the exception of two years spent at Wessington Springs, South Dakota, and ten years in Wisconsin just prior to coming to Hawarden, the balance of his life was spent in Iowa.

He was united in marriage with Susan Major at Clarksville, Iowa, February 25, 1880, and last February they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. In addition to his widow he is survived by five children: Mrs. Lottie Wringler of Amery, Wisconsin; John, Victor and Guy Hodgson of Hawarden, and Grant Hodgson of Omaha, Nebraska. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Emma Walrath of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. Sarah Shaw of Clarksville, Iowa, and fourteen grandchildren.

For many years Mr. Hodgson was a member of the Christian Church at Clarksville, Iowa, later transferring his membership to Waterloo. After coming to Hawarden he devoted his time largely to gardening, successfully cultivating quite extensive plots adjacent to his home. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, honest and upright in all his dealings and in every respect a good citizen of the community. His passing will be mourned by many outside the family circle.
