Alcester, South Dakota ~ Walter Holtkamp, 96, of rural Alcester, passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
   Funeral Service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester, South Dakota with Rev. Garen Pay officiating. Burial will follow in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery rural Alcester. Visitation with the family will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family.    Walter Holtkamp was born near Hawarden, Iowa on December 31, 1920, to Frank and Amelie (Wendel) Holtkamp. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden, IA. Later he became a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester, South Dakota.
   He served in World War II from October, 1942 to February, 1946. After his discharge, he farmed near Hawarden and later near Alcester, SD. He lived on the farm until June of 2015 when he became a resident at the Alcester Care Center.
   Walter was married to Gladys Knaack on May 25, 1952 at Pierson, IA. Gladys passed away on July 1, 1994. On April 26, 1996, he married Johanna (DeVos) Medema at Big Springs Baptist Church in rural Alcester. Walter’s favorite past time was dancing and music. He also enjoyed gardening and baking pies and cinnamon rolls which he generously shared with many people.
   Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Johanna; four daughters, Sharon (Dave) Nelson, Viborg, SD, Lenora (Steve) Hendry, Sioux Falls, SD, Marlys (Chuck) Vreugdenhil, Alcester, SD and Trudy Roberts, Sioux Falls, SD; two step sons, Randy Medema, Lexington, Kentucky and Doug (Jackie) Medema, Sioux Falls, SD; a sister-in-law, Esther Holtkamp, Hawarden, IA; eight grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Gladys; two brothers, Wendel and Herman; and three sisters, Louise Holtkamp, Dorothy Heiman, and Margaret Heiman.
