Rock Valley, IA: John B. Groeneweg, 96, of Rock Valley, Iowa died Wednesday, May 03, 2017 at Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6 at 10:30 AM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley with Rev. E.C Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Visitation, with the family present, will be Friday, May 5 at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley from 5:30-7:30 PM. Memorials may be given to Hegg Memorial Health Center or Netherlands Reformed Christian School. 
 
John B. Groeneweg, son of Bastian and Lydia (Vanden Bosch) Groeneweg, was born October 1, 1920 at Sioux Center, Iowa. John attended country school through the 8th grade. He was united in marriage with Marian De Jongh on February 19, 1947 at Rock Valley. Together the couple farmed northeast of Rock Valley. They moved into Rock Valley in 1982 and in 2013 they moved to Pleasant Acres in Hull, Iowa.
 
John was truly a farmer in every sense of the word. He loved working the land, raising livestock, and milking dairy cows. Even after moving to town he would often ask for a ride so he could be out at the farm. He would often enjoy going to the sale barn. He had previously served on the board for Hegg Memorial Health Center. John was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation.
 
John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marian Groeneweg; 4 children, Bernard “Bernie” (June) Groeneweg, Harlan (Betty) Groeneweg, Nelva (Art) Den Boer, all of Rock Valley, and Lila (Ron) Schreiner of Sioux Center, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Pat (John) Bauman of Rock Valley; 2 brothers, Simon (Judy) Groeneweg and Albert Groeneweg, both of Rock Valley; and sister-in-law, Alta Groeneweg of Rock Valley.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bastian and Lydia; infant daughter, Marlys Groeneweg; granddaughter, Rebecca Den Boer; 3 sisters, Anna (Henry) Van Ginkel, Rena (Dick) De Vries, and Lydia (Clarence) Terpstra; 3 brothers, Paul, Leonard (Catherine), and Walt Groeneweg; sister-in-law, Joanna Groeneweg.
