Mrs. Bertha Kleinhesselink, age 98, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, May 1, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church Chapel in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the funeral home.

Bertha Mae was born on May 10, 1918, at Orange City, the daughter of William H. and Rose (Zwagerman) Hofmeyer. She was raised on her family’s farm east of Newkirk.

On October 12, 1940, she married Joseph C. Kleinhesselink in Newkirk. They first lived on a farm west of Maurice and later moved to a farm south of Newkirk. Eventually they settled on a farm south of Boyden where they spent 35 years. In 1979, Joe and Bertha retired and moved to Orange City. Joe passed away at the age of 91, on May 4, 2008, after more than 67 years of marriage.

Bertha was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church for many years, where she participated in the Mission Fellowship and Women’s Chorus. After moving to Orange City, she and Joe became members of the First Reformed Church.

She was a committed Christian, devoted wife, and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed fishing trips and vacationing at Lake Okoboji with the extended members of her family.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Charles and Nelva Jean (Van Wyk) Kleinhesselink, of Everson, Washington; a daughter-in-law, Audrey (Noteboom) Kleinhesselink, of Alton; eleven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Kleinhesselink; a daughter, Joleen Espey; two sons-in-law, Joe Espey, and Myron Klaassen; two sisters and their husbands, Lillian and Peter Van Kley; and Hermina and Gerrit Schneider; a brother and his wife, Peter Willis and La Vonne Hofmeyer; two granddaughters, Jenna Kleinhesselink, and Kelly Meharg; and a grandson, Matthew Kleinhesselink.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
