Mr. Paul Den Hartog, age 89, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 29, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 9:30am, at the church.

Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Paul Eugene was born on May 6, 1927, at Orange City, the son of Cornelius and Magdeline (De Zeeuw) Den Hartog. He was raised in Orange City where he attended school. Following his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he enrolled at the Sioux Falls Technical School, where he studied book keeping.

On August 20, 1948, he married Joan Arlene Boone at the Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center. They made their home in Orange City where he worked as a book keeper for the Co-op Service Station, Pals Transfer, Kalsbeek Appliance, and Visser Brothers Plumbing and Heating. He later started Den Hartog Lawn and Garden in Orange City so that his family could work together. They also cared for the K-Products properties, and in the winter, the family sold Christmas trees.

He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church where he had served as a deacon. He was also a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City. He enjoyed traveling with his family and raising gladiolas, many of which he gave away.

Survivors include his wife of more than 68 years; three sons, Duane Den Hartog, Jerry Den Hartog, and Bruce Den Hartog, all of Orange City; a brother-in-law, Wayne Kooi; and Joan’s family, June Van Den Berg, Carol (Raymond) Sneller, Lillian Hogan, Ruth Boone, Marvin (Donna) Boone, Audrey (Elmer) Gesink, Karen (Irwin) De Boer, Judy (Ivan) Friese, Ruth (Gib) Meyer, Raymond (Hazel) Boone.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Cynthia (John) Brantsen, and Joyce Kooi; Joan’s parents, William and Carrie Boone; Joan’s siblings, William D. Boone, Annabel (Jim) Cochran, Vern Boone, and Kenneth Boone; and Joan’s brothers-in-law, Ted Van Den Berg, and Norman Hogan.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
