Mr. Lammert John Roetman, age 86, of rural Hospers, passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at his farm home.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, April 8, at 10:00 A.M., at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Reverend Nicholas Davelaar will officiate.

Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Lammert John was born on January 25, 1923, in rural Sheldon, the son of Frank and Hermina (Rozeboom) Roetman. He was raised near Archer, Sanborn, and Hospers, and graduated from Newkirk Consolidated High School in 1940.

During World War II from 1944 to 1946, he served in the United States Marine Corps. He held the rank of Corporal and was on active duty in the Asiatic and Pacific areas.

On December 3, 1948 he married Jeanette Mildred Vollink in Sheldon. They farmed near Hospers for sixty years. He was also an excellent welder and worked for several area manufacturers. In addition, he did special projects for family and friends.

Mr. Roetman was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Hospers where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was a member of the boards of directors of the Hospers Christian School and Unity Christian High School in Orange City, and he belonged to the American Legion.

He served on the Sioux County Youth Fair Board and the Sioux County Extension Council. For many years he was the sheep superintendent at the county fair. He was also a 4-H leader, providing many 4-Hers with lambs for their projects from his own Suffolk flock. He particularly enjoyed showing his own sheep at various shows and fairs.

Lammert was an avid sports spectator and loved fishing with his fishing buddies. His family and especially his grandchildren were dear to him and he appreciated the time he spent with all of them.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin, Bernard, and Howard Roetman, and numerous in-laws.

Memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Rock Valley and Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon.
