Mary Adelheid Winter, 96, Rock Rapids died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids. Services were held Friday, Sept. 29, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, the Rev. Henry Thorberg officiated. Burial was in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, rural Hull, under the direction of Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
Mrs. Winter was born June 30, 1904, in Lyon County, Iowa, the daughter of Dietrich and Johanna (Drewes) LaFrenz. She was raised near George and attended country school. She married Peter H. Winter on Aug. 18, 1923. The couple farmed in the Hull and George areas before moving to a farm near Rock Rapids in the late 1920s.
She did laundry for Lockwood-Jongewaard Funeral Home, did custodial work for Northwestern Bell Telephone and was a clerk with Golden Rule Store. She also did painting and wallpapering. Her husband died March 5, 1961. She entered Rosewood Heights Apartments in the 1970s, and Lyon Manor in 1998.She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Northwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers, Navy Mothers and American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Richard and Louise of Sioux City, and William and Barbara of Springfield, Mo.; a daughter and her husband, Leota and Glen Foltz of Rock Rapids; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Frieda Kahl and Adele Hanson, both of Rock Rapids, and Adeline Snyders of Larchwood; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret LaFrenz and Louise LaFrenz, both of Rock Rapids. She also was preceded in death by three brothers; four sisters; three daughters, Betty, Mildred and Marie; and two grandchildren.
