Herman Claus Winter was born April 22, 1887 at rural Boyden. He was the son of August and Anna Grave Winter. He lived his entire youth on the farm near Boyden. He was baptized on May 1, 1887 and confirmed March 31, 1901 in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church of Boyden under the instruction of Pastor Baethke in the German language.
He was married to Margaretha Kruse of Boyden on April 25, 1913. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1919. He was remarried on August 11, 1922 to Margreta Heinsohn at Basbeck, Germany. They farmed in South Dakota until 1930, then moved to a farm northwest of Boyden until they retired and moved to Rock Rapids in 1960, where he resided until the time of his death Oct. 8, 1973. He had been active in church activities at St. John Lutheran and served on the church council. He is survived by his wife.
Margaret; 4 sons: August of Madison, S. D., Alvin of George, Ruben of Boyden and Norven of Sheldon; 5 daughters: Louise (Mrs. Raymond Uilk) of Pipestone, Minn., Meta
(Mrs. Paul Fick) of Luverne, Minn., Hilda (Mrs. Herman Uilk) of Jasper, Minn., Elsie (Mrs. Alfred Fick) of Boyden. Luella (Mrs. Elmer Loges) of George; 45 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and also 5 brothers: William H. Winter of Boyden, Pastor John Winter of Waverly, la., Adolph Winter of Luverne, Minn., Albert Winter of Boyden and Pastor Theodore Winter of Austin, Texas and one sister, Dorothea Fick of Luverne, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, one son in infancy, his parents, one brother and two sisters
