Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Winter, 88, of Boyden were held on Thursday afternoon, August 24, 1950. Religious rites were conducted from the home of her oldest son, Herman C. Winter, followed by services in St. John Lutheran church at 2:00 P.M., with pastor Wm. Striepe officiating. Burial was made in St. John cemetery north of Boyden, under the direction of the Vogelaar funeral establishment in George. Casket bearers were: Fred Sohl Chris Hollander, Fred Schmidt of George, Peter Kruse, P. M. Kruse of Boyden, and Herman Kruse of Sheldon. The choir of the church sang a favorite hymn of the deceased, "Let Me Go." The last sad rites were largely attended, attesting to the esteem in which this pioneer in northwest Iowa was held. The following obituary was read by her pastor.
Anna Margretha Winter, nee Greve, was born May 30, 1862, at Jagel near Schleswig, province Schleswig, Germany. In early infancy she was baptized with her twin brother. With her parents Mr. and Mrs. Frenz and her four older brothers she emigrated to America in 1870, settling near Clinton, Iowa, where the family made it's home during the next four yrs. The family moved to the vicinity of what is now Melvin in Osceola county. Here, after receiving instruction in the Word of God by a traveling missionary, she was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on July 6, 1878. On April 27, 1882, she was united in holy wedlock with August Winter of Sioux county. The young couple established their home north of Boyden on what is now the Albert L. Winter farm. For thirty seven years they dwelt there, during which time they were active members of St. John Lutheran church. Inasmuch as God had blessed their labors they retired in 1919 and moved to George and transferred their membership to that place. On August 9, 1933, she was parted from her life's partners thru death, after having celebrated their golden wedding the year before. She continued to live in George until 1945 when her children built her a little home near the residence of her son Herman. Here, under the watchful eyes her son and daughter-in-law she could live out the remaining years of her life with peace of heart and mind.
She continued in comparatively good health for one of her age until about two weeks ago. On a visit in the home of her daughter, Dora, in Luverne, Minn., she was stricken. Every help and comfort that medical aid loving hearts could provide was hers But it clear from the beginning the Lord was preparing to call her home. That call she answered Monday night, Aug. 21, 1950, at 9:15 o'clock. Peace fully she fell asleep. She attained an age of 88 years, 2 months and 22 days.
Her passing is mourned by the following children: Mrs. Dora Fick, Luverne, Minn., Herman C. Winter, Heinrich A. Winter, Albert L. Winter of Boyden. Wm. H. Winter of Sheldon, Mrs. Emma Bietz of Parkston, S. Dak., Adolph Winter of Mission, Texas, and pastor Theodore Winter of Floresville, Texas. Surviving also are 55 grand-children, and 62 greatgrandchildren, and a number of nephews and nieces. One daughter, Alvina Stueven, died in 1934.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, all her brothers and sisters with their wives and husbands having preceded her in death. May she rest in peace and the light of eternity shine upon her. And may the God of all grace, mercy, and comfort, comfort those who mourn because of her departure.
