From the Boyden Reporter, October 26, 1922:

OBITUARY OF HENRY STUEVEN

Henry Stueven was born the 30th of April, 1859 at Basbeck, Germany. Soon after his birth he was baptized in the Lutheran church at Basbeck, where he also renewed his confessions of baptism on the day of confirmation in the year 1873. Wedding bells rang for him on the 4th day of May, 1884, when Miss Margaretha Sophia Henrietta Woelber became his wife. On the 9th day of March, 1891 they came to America and settled in Wheeler township, where they remained during the rest of their married life.

Up to the 13th of July, 1917 God permitted them to share life's joys and sorrows, but on this day Mrs. Stueven suddenly died of a stroke. After the death of his wife, Mr. Stueven farmed for two years, after which time he moved to George, where he spent the last days of his life. His daughter, Katie and his three youngest sons moved to town with their father. For the second time Mr. Stueven was united in marriage on the 7th day of June of this year to Mrs. Wm. Hinsch nee Woelber, a sister to his first wife.

The deceased enjoyed good health until about a year ago. However, he was able to be up and around. About three weeks before his death, his health began to fail, but it was not until Friday, the 6th of this month, that he was compelled to remain in bed. At noon he reposed for a noon nap, but upon awakening was unable to rise again. On the next day he received the Lord's Supper with his wife. Medical aid was summoned and it was found that his bladder was troubling him. Dr. Stern of Sioux Falls was called to perform a minor operation in order to relieve the patient. But all help that man could give seemed to be in vain. God had decided to call him unto Himself. From day to day he became weaker and weaker until he passed away last Thursday, the 12th.

The first marriage was blessed with 12 children, two of which went into eternity before the father. The deceased leaves to mourn his death his wife and ten children, Wilhelm, John and August who farm near Pipestone, Minn.; Claus[,] Herman, Mrs. Sophia Winter, Mrs. Anna Habbinga, Mrs. Katie Stueven and Fred who live in and near George and Henry who lives near Steen, Minn.

For 27 years he was a member of the Lutheran church, south of town. After he moved to George, he became a member of the local Lutheran church, where he also was a trustee. He was a respected citizen and a sincere Christian. May he rest in peace.

Funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran church Sunday afternoon. The remains were laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery nine miles south of town.
